We did it again! The third annual A Gnome Away From Home event was held in Collingwood over the weekend of 21-23 august 2009. Gnomes from near and far came and tested their knowledge (general and gnome), toured Farewell Spit, Bungee Jumped, Flying Gnomed, Raced, listened to music, and generally had fine old time. The girls in the G L A D (Gnome Literature and Art Department) spent months drawing and painting, sewing, searching and writing, to come up with new ideas for decorations and games. The workshop boys once again said "Yes" to every idea and challenge that was put to them - the exploding gnome on Sunday was fantastic! The weekend festivities began on Friday 21 August with a quiz night held in the Collingwood Tavern Bistro. 17 teams of 4 people and their accompanying gnomes once again took over the restaurant. Gnome hats and beards were the must have accessory of the night. On Saturday 22 August 36 intrepid folk accompanied by their gnome friends spent an aftenooon visiting Cape Farewell and Farewell Spit Lighthouse. It was a warm calm day, perfect for exploring at Fossil Point and at the sand dune. Seals and birds watched as the buses of pointy hat folk went by. Sunday 23 August began with the first ever gnome run - a 3.8km run/walk around the streets of Collingwood. 16 athletic individuals lined up at 9.30am and took off up Gibbs Road, through to Excellent Street, along State Highway 60 and back along Haven Road, finishing in Collingwood's main street. The first person across the finish line received the very first Gnome Run Trophy. We hope these will become highly contested and collectable in the years to come. The rest of Sunday morning was spent watching, and playing gnome sports in the main street. Once again fearless little gnomes flying foxed and bungee jumped. Two of the Tosser Triplets lost their sand all over the street. The gnome races were again highly contested. Once again gnome hats were the must have accessory of choice. The Takaka Collectable Vehicle Club gnomed up their vehicles, Colin Coke and Alan Swafford played some of our gnomed up songs and the Takaka Citizens Band gnomed up themselves while they entertained the crowd. We even found a gnome look-alike. The Weekend finished with shave-a-gnome. Our very own boss gnome and one of our gnome friends gave up their hair and beards for a very good cause. Close to $700.00 was donated to the Joan Whiting Rest Home. We appreciate the support from those who took part in our event, and those who donated prizes. We are looking forward to doing it all again in August 2010. So why not adopt a gnome or two and bring them to Collingwood for the 4th annual A Gnome Away From Home event. They will love you for it!
