The tours which travel the length of the spit stop to climb one of the huge dunes and for refreshments at our lighthouse keeper’s cottage in the shadow of the lighthouse. Whilst on the Lighthouse reserve we have time to explore, soak up the atmosphere and see the lenses which were once in the top of the tower. There is also a pouwhenua placed by the local iwi to indicate their connection to the spit, and nearby a panel explaining some of their legends. Muffins and hot drinks are included in the tour price and lunches can be provided for a small extra charge if we are on the Spit during the middle of the day. Our guides are passionate about the spit and are committed to ensuring that you get the most out of your experience. Join us, smell the sea air, feel the breeze on your face and the sand between your toes! Farewell Spit's beauty is equalled by the gruelling nature of the driving conditions. Sand, salt and sea-spray take their toll - but with the RL Bedfords which are the mainstay of our fleet we have a vehicle which is both robust and comfortable. The fleet is maintained to an exacting standard, refurbishment of the interiors is ongoing for passenger comfort and a hi-tech sound system ensures you won't miss a word of the commentary. Open the windows, enjoy the sea breeze, sit back and experience! Eco Tours Farewell Spit has been a sanctuary since the 1930's and provides home for over 90 species of bird, most importantly the waders. Bar tailed godwits, knots, curlews, whimbrels and turnstones fly 12,000km every Northern Hemisphere autumn, to spend the summer in the south. See them from the wide windows of our stylishly comfortable Eco Bus. Don't forget to bring - Camera, jacket, binoculars, and sunhat. (Refreshments are provided and meals can be arranged.) |
