Ocean beach, Farewell Spit

Today in Collingwood (where Farewell Spit Eco Tours is based) heavy cloud is scudding in from the west, dumping showers around the hills and across the Aorere River estuary. Occasionally the sun breaks through, casting golden light across the bay. The tide creeps in, filling the river channels with brown water after last night's rain and floating discarded logs back into the waterways.

But what we see here in the relative shelter of Collingwood is not always what will be experienced out on Farewell Spit. Some days the weather on the spit is soft and blue with rolling waves and a gentle wind. The sand is dotted with pied oystercatchers strutting around, feeding in the shallows. Other days it will be wild, unrelenting and almost primeval in its intensity, making it hard work even for the seals, and giving the seagulls and gannets lots of cruise speed on the wind. These are fabulous days to be out there too.

How do we know what we're heading out to when we leave for a tour? This is where technology gets exciting. You can check the weather on the spit any time you like by going to our webcam.

Check it out here

Let it load then run the cursor slowly, left to right, across the pic. There you will see how the day has been from sunrise until the present moment.

We're often surprised by how fine it is out there when we're looking out the window here in Collingwood at another passing shower.

Tours run all year from our base in Collingwood. Times vary each day depending on the tide – we need the tide to be low to maximise drive time on the beach. Departure times for our next six month's tours are also on the website – check them here. Bookings are essential, especially through summer.
